William Dean Kern , age 80, of Petersburg, formerly of Athens, passed away on Monday, October 2, 2017 at his residence.
Mr. Kern was born November 16, 1936 in Springfield, Illinois, the son of William L. and Jeanette Council Kern.
He is survived by his two sons, Robert Dean (Kristina) Kern of Greenview and Douglas William Kern of Springfield; three grandchildren; one great grandson; two stepsons, Jay Douglas (Camille) Nance of Greenview and Steven Douglas (Tina) Nance of Hannibal, MO; four step grandchildren; one sister, Marlene Wegner of Petersburg; one step-sister, Marlyn (Joe) Norris of Springfield, IL; several cousins; one nephew; and one niece.
Mr. Kern is preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Don Kern.
He worked for MAPCO for 16 years before being employed at S. & H. Trucking for 23 ½ years. He is a veteran of the US Army, spending 30 months in Germany.
Mr. Kern was a member and an Elder of the Indian Point Presbyterian Church near Athens. He was an avid Chicago Cubs and NASCAR fan.
Private graveside services will be held at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield.
Cremation rites have been accorded.
