William “Bill” Dirks, age 67, passed away on Thursday, December 29, 2022 at Decatur Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family.
Bill was born October 29, 1955 in Springfield, IL, the son of Ellis and Eileen (Landreth) Dirks.
He is survived by his wife, Lisa; three brothers, Dale (wife Karla), Richard (wife Gwen), and Robert (wife Wendi); brother-in-law, Don Sakalis; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Paula Sakalis; and nephew, Dirk Sakalis.
Bill graduated from Athens High School in 1973, where he played basketball.
Bill worked for over 25 years as a Grain Elevator Superintendent at Topflight Grain Co-op in Atwood, retiring in 2020.
He enjoyed the outdoors, including hunting. He definitely loved telling stories.
Bill was an avid Illini Basketball fan.
Cremation rites will be accorded. Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date.

My prayers and condolences are with you all. I am saddened to hear of Bill’s passing. He was such a wonderful person and I was so lucky to have him and the whole Dirks family as a part of my life. He will be missed and always remembered.

So sorry for your loss. I always enjoyed him. My father worked for his father so as children we were together many times. I have kept track of your family thru my brother.
I am glad your family has been a part of our family’s life.

I’m so sorry to just read of Bill’s passing. I was in Dale’s class at Athens and knew the Dirks family. I remember Bill playing basketball for Athens. I remember seeing a smile on his face and being pleasant. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Dirks family.
