Steven Lee Selby, age 61, a residence of Athens since 1992, passed away on Saturday, January 11, 2020 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, IL.
He was born on December 29, 1958 in Pekin, Illinois the son of Ronald Carl and Phyllis Kay Gambrel Selby.
He married Deborah Ann Severns on October 1, 1983 at the Oakford United Methodist Church in Oakford, IL. Then married her again on February 14, 1991. Steve and Deb liked to say “the divorce did not work out.”
Steve is survived by his wife, Deborah; two children, Elizabeth Ashely (husband Josh) Davis of Athens, IL and Grace Abigail LynnAnn Selby of Athens, IL; five grandchildren, Isaac Michael and Lucas Alexander Sandlin of Washington, IL, Zander, Lilly, and Seth Odin Davis of Athens, IL; father, Ronald Carl Selby of Peoria, IL; sister, April (husband Chuck) Benkiel of Streamwood, IL; brother, Phillip Selby of Springfield, MO; sister, Kelley (husband Tim) Gibson of Tampa, FL; sister, Angela Gullick of Charleston, SC; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Phyllis Kay Selby; brother Ronald Allen Selby; nephew, Jeremy Selby; beloved uncle, Richard “Dick” Gambrel; maternal grandfather, Lelon Gambrel; and best friend Robert “Bob” Bolyard.
Steve was an electrician, a cabinet maker, and a contractor. He was self taught in many of his trades.
He was a lifelong NRA member and an old western gun enthusiast, and a member of SASS. He was also a Hamm operator with the Sangamon Valley Chapter of Hamm operators. Steve also adored his classic country music and was quite a country bumpkin aficionado. Steve was a great lover of kitty cats and one dog, Peanut Selby.
Steve was baptized at and was a member of the Athens Christian Church. He came to have a deeply personal relationship with the Lord prior to his passing.
Visitation for Steve will be held on Thursday, January 23, 2020 from 10:00 AM until time of funeral services at 11:00 AM at the Athens Christian Church with Rev. John Swinford officiating.
Cremation rites will be accorded after the services.
Memorials can be made to the “Steven Selby Memorial Fund” for assistance towards funeral expenses.

We are so sorry to hear of Steve’s passing. I know you have all been through a long ordeal of illness and tribulations but your love was strong. Blessings to you all as you adjust to life without him.

I am so sorry to hear about Steve’s passing. I know he has been through a lengthy illness and know in my heart that he is in God’s loving arms. While I cannot make it to the services, your family is in my thoughts and prayers. Love and light to you all.

Deb, So sorry about Steve’s passing but glad that he is out of pain. You and the family are in our thoughts and prayers. Hang tight to the good memories as they will live on forever in your heart and minds. Sorry we can’t make the services but we are with you in spirit. Love ya, Cheryl and Beth
