Michael Lee Freeman, age 68, of Petersburg, passed away on Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.
He was born July 23, 1948 in Springfield, IL, the son of Fred and Evelyn Freeman.
Mike married Jan Phelps on June 15, 1984.
He is survived by his wife, Jan; children, Katie (husband Lance) Kovacs and Josh Freeman; brother, Pat (wife Suz) Freeman; nephews, Andrew Denton, Aaron Freeman, and Colin (wife Molly) Knapp; and niece, Megan Freeman.
Mike is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Gayle Denton; and brother-in-law, Cecil Denton.
He worked for the Illinois Department of Human Services, retiring in 2011 after 39 years of service.
He served as a Seabee in the U.S. Navy during Vietnam.
Mike was a member of the Petersburg United Methodist Church. He was an avid bird lover and enjoyed gardening and fishing.
A memorial gathering will be held on Friday, March 17, 2017 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Mott & Henning Funeral Home in Athens.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 18, 2017 at 10:30 AM at the Petersburg United Methodist Church.
Rev. John Vidakovich will be officiating.
Cremation rites will be accorded.
Memorials can be made to the Petersburg United Methodist Church.

Mike was a one of a kind great guy, kind to all he met.

I only worked with Mike directly for a brief time (just before his retirement), but I really liked him. He was always ready to help figure things out at work, and he had a great sense of humor. My condolences.
