Melvin Mitts, age 92, of Springfield, passed away on June 1, 2014, at Villa Healthcare West in Sherman, IL.
He is survived by his special friend Iona Meacham, his great-nephew Terry W. Brown, several generations of nieces and nephews and other friends.
Melvin was born July 9, 1921 in Springfield, IL the son of Alfred Truman and Ethel Ham Mitts.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by 2 half brothers and 2 half sisters.
Melvin served with the US Army as an MP during World War II in Trinidad and Spain. He was also a member of Athens Masonic Van Meter Lodge #762 for over 65 years, a Republican Precinct Committeeman for several decades, on the Sangamon County Farm Bureau Board, and President of Brittin Cemetery.
He was also involved with the maintenance of the Illinois State Fairgrounds for many years and a lifelong farmer in Fancy Creek Township who had a passion for growing pumpkins.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 4, 2014 from 12 noon until time of funeral service at 2 PM.
Bob Ervin will be officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Brittin Cemetery Association or Villa Healthcare West in Sherman, IL.
Burial will be held at Brittin Cemetery.

I was very sorry to see that Melvin had passed away. He was an outstanding citizen and a true gentleman. It was an honor to know him.

Terry and family so sorry about Melvin. We just loved to see him when he would come over to Iona’s house. He was always bringing us veggies from his garden. Have some great memories of the cook outs also. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Melvin was a very special friend to my Dad, Glenn Brown. Melvin was so good to Dad, going to visit him and taking him places in the later years of Dad’s life. Our thoughts and prayers to Melvin’s dear friend, Iona. John and Beverly Brown Warner
