Melvin Kemmerling, age 93, of Springfield, passed away on Monday July 6, 2015 at Regency Care in Springfield.
He is survived by his wife, Ione; two sons, Curt Kemmerling of Springfield and Byron Kemmerling of Springfield; sister, Ava Evans of Kincaid; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; nieces, Tammy (Don) Hahn of Zionsville, Indiana and Candis Manion of Riverton; as well as many other nieces and nephews.
Melvin is preceded in death by son, Dennis; daughter, Susan Henderson and brother Marvin Kemmerling.
He was born June 15, 1922 in Kincaid, Illinois, the son of John and Emma Moore Kemmerling.
Melvin married Ione Brayton on December 16, 1945 in LuVerne, Iowa.
He graduated from Kincaid High School in 1940 and Illinois Business College in Springfield in 1941.
Melvin was employed by C&IM Railway for 44 years, retiring in 1985 as Executive Assistant to the Vice President & General Manager. Melvin was the secretary of the Athens School Board for 9 years. He also served in the U.S. Army from 1941-1945.
He was a Red Coat Volunteer at Springfield Memorial Hospital for 28 years. Melvin was also a member of Cantrall United Methodist Church, a member of Lincoln Land Beekeepers Association, and a member of Springfield Area Woodworkers.
Visitation for Melvin will be held from 9-11 am on Monday, July 13, 2015 at Cantrall United Methodist Church with the funeral service immediately following at 11 am.
Burial will be held at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield.
Rev. Paulette Cott will be officiating.
