Kern, Kenneth

Kenneth E. Kern, 75, of Rochester, died at 4:18 PM, Tuesday, March 18, 2008 at Memorial Medical Center.

He was born on May 16, 1932 in Menard County to Noah and Irma Lucht Kern. He married Dorothy A. Davis in 1957 in Elkhart. She died in 2007. He was also preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: George and W.L. Carroll Kern, and a sister: Lois Fox.

Mr. Kern worked in the education field for many years. He taught high school at Tallula, Elkhart, Danvers, and Fairbury. He was principal of Edinburg Elementary School, North Green High School at White Hall, and was assistant superintendent of the Rochester School District for 25 years prior to his retirement in 1992.

He was a member of the Rochester Christian Church where he served as treasurer of the Sunday School for several years. He was a member of the University of Illinois Alumni Association and a former member and officer of the Illinois Principal’s Association.

He was an avid fan of the University of Illinois Basketball and the NCAA Basketball Tournament.

Survivors include five sisters: Mary Mohler of Salisbury, Vera Jane Howell of LaVerne, CA, Sharon (Owen) McIntire of Athens, Barbara and Judy Kern of Petersburg: Five Sisters-in-law: Marilyn Kern of Petersburg, Thelma and Elma (Toots) Davis of Elkhart, Marie, Mary and Lois Davis of Sherman; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at Mott and Henning Funeral Home in Athens with Rev. David Upchurch officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 PM on Tuesday, March 25, 2008. Burial will be in Elkhart Cemetery.
