Joy Lucille Smith, age 95, of Lincoln, formerly of Greenview, IL, passed away on Thursday, April 27, 2023 at The Christian Village in Lincoln, Illinois.

Joy was born November 13, 1927 near Virden, IL, the daughter of Arthur Sidney and Bertha Evelyn (Coultas) Mortimer.

She married Bryce N. Smith of Virden, IL at her parent’s home near Virden on September 27, 1946.

Mourning her passing are her daughter, Evelyn Smith; sons, Norman (Martha) Smith and Larry (Deborah) Smith; grandchildren, Eric, Andrea (Bryan Guarante); two great-grandchildren, Cierra and Benjamin; a step-grandson, several step-great grandchildren and several step-great great grandchildren; a brother, Russell (Betty) Mortimer; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bryce; her parents; a sister, Dorothy; and three brothers, Raymond, Kenneth, and Eldon Dean.

She graduated from Virden High School in 1945 and became a bookkeeper at Virden Grain Co., Sweetwater Elevator, and Cramer Supply in Greenview.

Joy was a member of Greenview United Church, having served as an elder, choir member, and memorial fund chairman for many years.  She was an avid bowler and was a Women’s Illinois Bowling Congress member for years. Joy was a lifetime member of the Greenview AMVET Ladies Auxiliary #179.

A graveside service for Joy will be held on Friday May 5, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Elmwood Cemetery in Greenview with Stephanie McCullough officiating.

  7. Sincerest condolences to the Smith family. We had the great pleasure of living next to one of the nicest, sweetest, most kind-hearted neighbors a family could hope to have. For 32 years we had the pleasure of living next to and knowing Joy, Bryce and family. Joy was a truly wonderful person that we all loved dearly and are deeply saddened to hear of her passing.
