James Patrick “Pat” Thompson

James Patrick “Pat” Thompson of Fancy Prairie passed away on November 5th at his home, surrounded by loved ones.  Pat was born to the late James Thompson and Alice Winterbauer (McCue) on June 24th, 1933 in Menard County.

He is a graduate of Athens High School in 1951.

Pat enlisted in the Army Armed forces in 1953 achieving the rank of Corporal at the time of his honorable discharge in 1955.  He married the late Wyvonne Thompson (Turner) in 1956 and they enjoyed most of their married life in Menard County.  He spent his entire life in agriculture; farming and as owner of Thompson Fertilizer Service and served several years as a Menard County Road Commissioner.

He was a member of The American Legion, Knights of Columbus and past member of the Fancy Prairie Volunteer Fire Department.  When not working, Pat enjoyed traveling, ballroom dancing and collecting antiques.  He had the gift of gab and would not hesitate strike up a conversation with random strangers.  He will be missed for his infectious laugh and willingness to help anyone.

Pat is survived by his four children:  Jim of Lincoln, Mark (Brenda) of Sherman, Don of Fancy Prairie and Debbie “Angella” of Athens.  He is also survived by 5 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.  He was predeceased by his parents.

Funeral services will be held at St. John Vianney Church in Sherman on Sunday, November 12, 2023 with visitation starting at 4:00 pm until time of Funeral Mass at 6:00 pm.  Burial will take place at Camp Butler National Cemetery on Monday Nov 13th at 10:00 a.m.

In lieu of sending flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Fancy Prairie Fire Dept.

    He will be missed, but there will be a Reunion one day!

  2. Pat & Wy were friends with my parents (Merle & Vera Armintrout) for many many years. After the passing of my dad and Wy, my mom and Pat stayed in touch. Yesterday Mom told me of Pat’s passing. I’m sorry for your family’s loss.

  4. To the family of a Great man named Pat he was always a well respected man that when I worked at Mapco and he picked up chemicals or Nh3 he was always in a pleasant person to talk to through the Years but he will be missed but he left a this earth as a Great Family Man!
