James Lewis

James E. Lewis, 85, of Athens passed away peacefully at St. John’s Hospital on Thursday, January 9, 2025, with his family by his side.

James was born January 24, 1939 in Springfield, IL to James and Helen (McDonald) Lewis. He married Doris Jean Anders on June 27, 1959 and they shared 54 years together, until her passing on October 20, 2013. To this union, five children were born.

Jim enjoyed many hobbies, including woodworking, working puzzles, fishing, camping and listening to Williamson Branch, but he most enjoyed spending time with his family. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, and enjoyed going to Illinois basketball games.

 After his retirement from City Water, Light and Power in 1997, Jim and Jean traveled and thoroughly enjoyed life, making yearly trips to CMA Fest in Nashville every June.

Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Jean; parents James S. and Helen M. Lewis; brothers Thomas Lewis and Harold Lewis and brother-in-law, Jim McDonough.

Left to cherish his memory are his five children; Kathy, (husband, John) Richardson, of Springfield, IL James M., (wife, Robin) Lewis, of Auburn, IL, Richard, (wife, Rita) Lewis, of Dixon, MO, Kim, (husband Tim) Richardson of Moweaqua, IL, and Robert, (wife Dawn) Lewis of Springfield, IL, grandchildren, John (Lynn), Jenn (Frank), Rick (Lisa), Ashley (Andrew), Jessica (Chris), Allison, Stephanie, Kaitlin, Jordyn (Shelby), Morgan (Clayton), Marissa (Drew) and Justin, 15 great-grandchildren and 1 on the way, sisters, Shirley McDonough and JoAnn (Steve) Peel, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. 

Visitation for Jim will be held on Thursday, January 16, 2025 from 10:00 AM until time of funeral services at 12:00 Noon at Mott & Henning Funeral Home in Athens, IL. Burial will be held at Joel Hall Cemetery in Athens immediately after the services.
