In loving memory of Betty Lois Wigg Guffey, who was 83, lived in Springfield, and passed on Thursday, November 22, 2007 at Memorial Medical Center with her family at her side.

Mrs. Guffey was born November 2, 1924 in Villisca, Iowa, the daughter of Jacob M. and Ruth Marie Larson Wigg. They preceded her in death. She married James B. (Jack) Guffey on December 21, 1943 in San Leandro, CA. Mr. Guffey preceded her in death on April 10, 2000. She is also preceded in death by a brother Roy Wigg. She went to California to work for Caterpillar as a part of the war effort then followed her husband to Biloxi, MS and worked at a guest house at Kessler Field taking care of GI families. They later moved to Denver, CO, then back to Iowa, and finally settling in Williamsville where she was a farm wife & child care provider. She and Jack farmed in the Williamsville area for 46 years before retiring in 1984 then later moving to Springfield. She enjoyed many trips across country visiting friends and family. Mrs. Guffey devoted most of her life to caring for children, researching her family’s genealogy, and taking care of her family. Mrs. Guffey received her teaching certificate in 1941 and taught in a one-room school house in Iowa. She also substituted at Sherman Elementary as well as Kiddie Kollege, Sparc, Oaktree Learning Academy, as well as at home with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.She was an assistant 4-H leader of North Sangamon 4-H club, was active with Boy Scouts & Girls Scouts, as well as the Williamsville United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women & church choir.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. at the Williamsville United Methodist Church with Memorial Services following at 7:00 P.M. with Rev. Dick Piscatelli officiating. Mott & Henning Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Cremation rites were accorded with burial at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Nyman, Iowa on December 1, 2007 at 1:00 P.M.
