Freddie Hendrickson, age 88, of Springfield, passed away on Tuesday, September 7, 2021 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.

He was born December 11, 1932 in Macomb, Illinois the son of Rev. Fred B. and Mary (Carmen) Hendrickson.

Fred married Rowena Hudson on September 5, 1953 in Macomb, IL.

Mourning his passing are his two daughters, Dawn (Rich) Stuemke of Springfield and LaDonna (Dale) Smith of Springfield; one son, Fred (Susan) Hendrickson, Jr. of Cape Coral, FL; ten grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; a brother, Jack Hendrickson; and a sister, Carmen (Bob) Minge; and several nieces and nephews.

Fred is preceded in death by his wife Rowena and a granddaughter, Amy Lynn Smith; and a brother, Tom Hendrickson; and a sister, Carol Hendrickson.

At 17 he joined the U.S. Navy to serve during the Korean Conflict.

After fulfilling his time of service, he attended Western Illinois University to obtain his B.A. in Education.  He later attended Sangamon State University, now U of I Springfield, to obtain his Master’s in Education Administration.

He taught at Fisher High School, Rantoul High School, and Pawnee High School.  He retired from Capitol Area Vocational Center, where he taught Building Trades and Drafting.  Fred was loved by his students and trained many of the skilled contractors in the area.  He could never go anywhere without running into former students and colleagues.

Fred was an active member of Calvary Church.  He served for several years with MAPS, a mission outreach program.  He supported many mission outreaches and had a heart for serving others.

Fred loved having tools in his hands and a project to work on.  He also loved ice cream and having family nearby.

Graveside services for Fred will be held on Wednesday, September 15, 2021 at 2:00 PM at Camp Butler National Cemetery with Rev. Paul Rose officiating.

Memorial contributions can be made to Operation Shoebox or Calvary Church Missions.

  1. My heart broke when I read of Fred’s passing. He was such a sweet and kind gentleman and a wonderful neighbor. I loved listening to his many stories.

  3. My condolences go out to all of the family. Fred worked with my dad for many years and they have stayed in touch since retiring years ago. He drafted the plans for a building addition to my house & spent much time helping my dad & I with the actual work. He was a true gentleman with a giving spirit and he will be missed by many, many people.

  4. So sad to hear of Fred’s passing, he was not only a neighbor to us, he was a dear friend. It was always such a pleasure to talk with him and see him smile, his smile would light up a room. He will be so sadly missed. Rip Fred.

  7. There was a time or two as a young adult that I needed to be rescued. Fred and Rowena were always there with open arms to help in any way they could! I’ve always had a special place in my heart for them because of their gift for helping others!
    My condolences to your loved ones, for you will be missed here on earth my friend but we will someday see you again. I’ll be praying peace and comfort for all.
    How exciting it must have been hearing, “you have arrived”!

  8. i had fred for building trades teacher at souyheast he taught me alot i steal use what he taught to this day he was a good person he will be missed
