Bobby Abeln, age 79, of Athens, passed away on Friday, October 14, 2022 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.
He was born August 18, 1943 in Gillespie, Illinois, the son of John Henry and Maude Elizabeth (Huff) Abeln.
Mourning his passing are his three sons, Dirk (wife Amanda) Abeln, Trevor (wife Susie) Abeln, and Curt Abeln; grandchildren, Gaige (Maddie) Robinson, Megan Baker, Tyler Abeln; three great-grandchildren, Paige, Paiton, and Paison; brother, Charles Dixon; sister, Peggy Hurt; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Charlotte Ethell, Kenneth Freer, John C. Abeln, Paul R. Abeln, Lewis “Peck” Abeln, Pauline Diugiud, James R. Abeln, and Helen E. Gwillim.
He attended Athens High School.
Bobby worked for Adventure Village for many years and worked as a traveling salesman for many years for several companies.
He a member of the Ansar Shrine in Sherman and also a VFW member.
Bobby loved woodworking, fishing, hunting, riding his four-wheelers. He especially loved playing with his great-grandchildren. He attended carnivals, fairs, and made sure to annually attend the State Fair.
Bobby honorably served his country for the United States Air Guard.
Visitation for Bobby will be held at on Saturday, October 22, 2022 from 9:00 until time of funeral services at 10:30 AM at Mott & Henning Funeral Home in Athens.

Peg and Melissa,
I’m so sorry for the loss of your brother, Bobby. I remember Bobby as a handsome young man when he was in the service. I was a teenager and at your house and he came to surprise you. You were so happy that you cried.
You will see him again in heaven.
