Behnke, Albert

Albert Behnke, 98, of Athens went home to be with his Lord Saturday July 5, 2008 at St. John’s Hospital.

He was born October 1, 1909 in Lombard, the son of Emil and Anna Birr Behnke. He married his wife of 67 years, Eleanor Mae Stein, November 28, 1935 in Melrose Park. He was preceded in death by his wife and infant son.

Surviving are two sons, Don (wife Gayle) of Carterville, Lee (wife Dawn) of Athens; daughter, Sandra (husband Merritt) Foulk of Athens; nine grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and a niece.

Mr. Behnke was a quiet and gentle man with a wonderful sense of humor who enjoyed his family above all else. He was a skilled craftsman and carpenter. He retired from the Carpenter’s Shop of Elmhurst Memorial Hospital in 1976. He relocated from Lombard to Athens in 1977. He enjoyed traveling with his wife throughout most of his retired life. He also enjoyed camping, fishing and boating. His hobbies included woodworking and gardening. He was raised in the Christian faith and maintained his faith throughout his lifetime.

Services will be held at Mott & Henning Funeral Home where visitation will be held from 5 until 7 PM on Tuesday and where funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday.
