Barbara Shannon Cox, 73, passed away peacefully on March 24th, 2020 with both of her children at her side, holding her hand and guiding her to the world beyond this one. She was a dedicated teacher, talented artist, and lover of history. Most importantly, she was a loving mother and grandmother, who passed on many talents, traditions, and traits to her children and grandchildren.
Born on October 19th, 1946 in Athens, IL, to Herbert and Helen (Jensen) Shannon, she was raised surrounded by art, music, and strong values, which she carried into her adult life. In addition to her teaching career in art with Metro Nashville Schools at Glencliff High School for 34 years, she was an integral and active member of the Tennessee Art League for almost 50 years, a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa international teacher’s sorority for more than 30 years, and continued to produce and exhibit art throughout even this past year.
She is survived by her son, Chris Cox (Amanda) and daughter, Betsy McMackin (John); grandchildren, Kathryn Cox, William Cox, Hannah McMackin, Dylan McMackin, and Jacob McMackin. She is also survived by the father of her children, Stephen Cox; siblings, Bill Shannon and Janet Helm (Dave); along with many nieces, nephew, and great nieces and nephew. She was preceded in death by her parents and infant, twin sister, Carolyn Ruth Shannon.
Barbara’s Celebration of Life Services will be held on Saturday July 25, 2020 from 10:00 until 12:00 Noon at Mott & Henning Funeral Home in Athens.
